New Delhi: The internet ban has been extended for two more days on three borders in Delhi, namely Singhu, Gazipur, and Tikri, where farmers’ agitation going on. The ban was extended by the Union Home Ministry. The ban is part of a series of protests over the past few months against the agricultural law passed by parliament.
Under the new order, the ban was extended from 11 pm on January 31 to 11 pm on February 2. The Internet was banned by the Home Ministry from January 26 to 30 under the Telecom Service (Public Emergency Safety Rules), 2017, the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, in the wake of the farmers’ protest.
The last time the Internet was banned under this section was on December 19, 2019, during the CAA protest. The law was amended in 2017 to authorize the Union Home Secretary and State Home Secretaries to ban the Internet in the context of public safety.
