Mumbai: Ahead of the Mumbai assembly elections in Maharashtra, the Maharashtra government has given the status of “Rajmata” to the indigenous cow. Cows got Rajmata status through a resolution signed by Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan. Officials said the decision underlines the spiritual, scientific and historical importance of the cow in Indian society.
After the Cabinet meeting, official sources said, “In view of the influence of indigenous cow on Indian culture since Vedic times, utilization of indigenous cow’s milk in human diet, place of cow dung and cow urine in Ayurvedic medicine, panchagavya treatment system and organic farming practices.
“Cows have been an important part of human life since time immemorial. The cow has been given the name ‘Kamadhenu’ since ancient times due to its historical, scientific and spiritual significance. We can find different breeds of cows across the country; however, the number of native cows is rapidly decreasing,” the resolution said. “Decreasing the number of indigenous cows is a matter of concern. It is in view of this that the government declares the indigenous cow as ‘Rajmata-‘,” added the resolution.
This new decision is of the government led by Eknath Shinde. At the same time, many people supported this resolution, but the opposition leaders said that it can only be seen as an election strategy.
