Shimla: The death toll in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand due to heavy rains has reached 81. About 20 people are missing in Himachal. 15 houses destroyed in landslides in Vikas Nagar, Dehradun, Uttarakhand. Flood-like situation in Punjab too.
Heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand have caused heavy damage for the past four days. Death toll in Himachal flash floods rises to 71. Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu informed that the damage was more than 1000 crore rupees. The search is on for those missing in the rain and landslides. The bodies of 13 of the 21 people who died in the landslide in Shimla’s Summerhill area have been recovered. The rescue operation is in progress under the leadership of National State Disaster Response Force, Police and Army. Landslides also occurred in Fagli and Krishna Nagar areas. Operations to evacuate people to safer places are also underway with the help of Air Force helicopters, Army personnel and NDRF.
In Uttarakhand, 15 houses, 7 cowsheds and several roads were destroyed in a landslide in Vikas Nagar, Dehradun. Local residents were shifted to relief camps. Badrinath Kedarnath road restoration work has started. A similar flood situation is present in Punjab. Hoshiarpur, Gurdaspur and Rupnagar districts of Punjab were inundated when excess water was released from Bhakra and Pong dams. Although the water level in the Delhi Yamuna river is above the danger level, the government has assessed that there are no other crises.
