Gurugram: Former Union Minister, former JD(U) president, and RJD leader Sharad Yadav (75) passed away. He died at the Fortis Memorial Research Institute in Gurugram. He was admitted to the hospital on Thursday afternoon due to age-related ailments.
Sarath Yadav was one of the young leaders who emerged in the 1970s through the ‘JP movement’ that swept across the country against Indira Gandhi’s authoritarian stances that trampled democracy. He has been elected seven times to the Lok Sabha and three times to the Rajya Sabha.
In 1989, he handled the textiles and food processing departments in the VP Singh government, and in 1999, he handled the aviation, labor, and food public distribution consumer affairs departments in the Vajpayee government. He was a Member of Parliament for 33 years. After the formation of Janata Dal (United) in 2003, he was the National President till 2016.
Nitish Kumar left JD(U) and joined RJD after joining BJP. In 2017, Sharad Yadav left the JDU after the JDU decided to go back to the BJP-led NDA. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former Prime Minister Deve Gowda, and others have condoled the death of Sharad Yadav.
