New Delhi: The Supreme Court granted time to the central government to respond to the petition challenging the Citizenship Amendment Act. The court directed to give a reply within three weeks. At the same time, the Supreme Court was not ready to grant an interim stay on the petition.
The case will be heard again on April 9. 237 petitions related to the Citizenship Amendment Act came up for consideration by the Supreme Court. The petition was filed by Indian Union, Muslim League and DYFI. The Muslim League responded that it was relieved by this action of the Supreme Court. The bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud considered the petitions.
The Center asked for 4 weeks time to reply but the Supreme Court directed to reply within three weeks. Moreover, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the central government, said that the Citizenship Amendment Act will not take away the citizenship of anyone. Meanwhile, the Muslim League responded that the Supreme Court’s action on the petition was a big relief.
