The Union Home Ministry has come up with a draft law that requires the religion of the parents to be recorded separately for the birth registration of the child. Henceforth, there will be separate columns for recording the religion of father and mother while registering the birth of a child. This rule will also apply to adoption of a child.
In this regard, the state governments should notify before the law comes into force. Also the approval of the state governments should be obtained. Parliament had passed the Birth and Death Registration Amendment Bill 2023 (allowing birth certificate to be used as a single document for school admission, voter roll, Aadhaar number, driving license, marriage registration and appointment to government jobs) in the last monsoon session. The government believes that this will help to make social benefits and public services transparent and efficient.
