New Delhi: Women have been promoted to the rank of Colonel in the Army. Five women who have completed 26 years in the Army have been promoted to the rank of Colonel by the Selection Board.
In the signal section of the army Lt. Colonel Sangeetha Sardana, in the EME category Lt. Colonels Sonia Anand and Navneet Duggal, Lt. Richa Sagar, and Reenu Khanna have been selected for the rank of Colonel in the Engineering section. This is the first time that women from these categories have been given the rank of Colonel.
Earlier, women from the Army’s Medical, Judge Advocate General, and Army Education divisions were given the rank of Colonel. This is an indication of increasing their opportunities in the army by giving the rank of colonel to more women. The move also underscores gender equality in the military, official sources said.
