New Delhi: The Center has taken steps to make Aadhaar mandatory for adding new names to the voters’ list. The Central Government has approached the Unique Identification Authority (UIDAI) seeking permission from the Election Commission to use Aadhaar. The move is in line with guidelines issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology last year.
In 2019, the Election Commission wrote a letter to the Law Secretary asking for permission to use Aadhaar to check voter registration problems. For this, the commission suggested that the Representation of the People Act should be amended. The Ministry of Law agreed and sent the recommendation to the Cabinet for approval. Meanwhile, no final decision has been made in this regard.
