New Delhi: The Center has issued a new order banning 54 more Chinese apps in the country. Apps from leading Chinese technology companies such as Tencent, Alibaba, and Netz are banned. The action was taken citing privacy violations and security issues.
The government banned a number of Chinese apps in 2020, including the short video platform Tik Tok. The new move by the Union IT Ministry comes against the backdrop of many of this re-operating under new names.
The government estimates that the apps are passing on the private information of Indians to countries including China. The government has instructed app stores, including the Google Play Store, not to make these apps available in India. The action is in accordance with Section 69A of the Information Technology Act.
