Lucknow: At least 43 people were killed in several parts of Uttar Pradesh during Saturday night’s rains. Many people were injured. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who expressed grief over the death, announced Rs 4 lakh compensation to the family of the deceased.
Heavy casualties were reported in several districts. Four people were killed by lightning and four others died after tree felling. Lucknow recorded 57.4 mm rainfall on Saturday. This is the first time in 61 years that a single day of May has seen so much rain in Lucknow. The previous record was 57 mm of rain on May 28, 1959.
The Taj Mahal complex was also damaged by heavy rains. Damage to the main gate, marble, and sandstone caves has been damaged. However, Archaeological Survey of India official Vasant Kumar Savarnkar said the main building and the towers were not damaged.
