Srinagar: Senior Kashmiri leader Syed Ali Shah Gilani, who passed away yesterday, was laid to rest at Srinagar Hyderpora this morning. The burial was at 4:30 in the morning with heavy security. Only Gilani’s relatives and close friends were allowed to attend.
Gilani, who had been ill for a long time, died at his residence in Srinagar on Wednesday. He was 91 years old. Gilani spent more than two decades in prison. He was placed under house arrest after his special status in Kashmir was taken away. Released last year.
Journalists were not allowed to attend the funeral. Internet and mobile services were also restricted.
Only the postpaid service of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited was operational. Traffic was not allowed in major cities.
Gilani, who has been the face of separatist politics in Kashmir for more than three decades, resigned as chairman of the All-Party Hurriyat Conference last year.
