New Delhi: The Central Government has issued a notification that June 25, the anniversary of Emergency, will be observed as “Constitution Killing Day” (Samvidhan Hatya Diwas) in the coming years. The then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared Emergency in the country on June 25, 1975. Constitution Killing Day will become a reminder of what happens when the Constitution is trampled upon. The Center also said that this is a tribute to those who had to suffer during the dark phase in the history of the country.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that this announcement is to honor the great contributions of those who had to take inhumane measures during the Emergency. He also said that this is a tribute to the lakhs of people who fought to revive democracy by facing the tortures of the government which adopted it as an oppressive policy.
It is estimated that the center is aiming for a political response to the accusations of the Congress and the opposition alliance that the Modi government will subvert the constitution. The main campaign of the “India” alliance in the Lok Sabha elections centered on the Constitution. Rahul Gandhi reiterated this campaign by holding up a copy of the Constitution when he was sworn in as an MP.
