New delhi: The official radio broadcast under Prasar Bharti will henceforth be known simply as ‘Akashavani’. An order was issued last day directing to completely avoid the title ‘All India Radio’ and use only Akashvani.
The official announcement of the director general of Akashvani in this regard was made on Wednesday. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has suggested that Prasar Bharti’s radio division be called Aakashvani.
All future broadcasts and programs of the organization, which has been operating in India since British times, will be presented under the Aakashvani brand.
In 1936, the country’s official radio broadcast was named All India Radio. Nobel laureate Rabindra Nath Tagore coined the word Akashvani for the first time in 1939. Later, in 1956, radio broadcasting was given the name Aakashvani. At the same time, the name All India Radio continued.
The current order states that the name Akashvani should be used instead of All India Radio in all radio programs and official communications.
