New Delhi: Central Govt to consolidate International Driving Permit. The Union Ministry of Surface Transport and Highways issued a notification in this regard on 26th August 2022 to facilitate citizens across the country in obtaining International Driving Permit.
India, being a signatory to the International Road Traffic Convention, 1949 (Geneva Convention), has decided to make licenses available on a mutually acceptable basis between countries as prescribed by this convention. At present, the format, size, model, color, etc. of the International Driving Permit issued varied across states. Because of this, many citizens faced difficulties in foreign countries. With the new amendment, the format, size, color, etc. of the permit has been standardized across India to conform to the basic model of the Geneva Convention.A QR code has also been introduced to link the permit with the driving license. For the convenience of regulatory authorities, a comparison of vehicle categories covered by various conventions and the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 has also been added.
