New Delhi: Journalist and co-founder of Alt News, a fact-checking website, Mohammad Zubair has been granted bail by a Delhi court. The Patiala House Court granted bail to Zubair in a case filed by the Delhi Police on charges that he had hurt religious sentiments in his tweet in 2018. Additional Sessions Court Judge Devendra Kumar Jangala granted bail on one surety of Rs 50,000 and a condition not to leave the country without the permission of the court.
Zubair, who was arrested, approached the Sessions Court after the Metropolitan Magistrate denied him bail on July 2. Zubair, who was arrested on June 27, is currently in Delhi Police custody. The Supreme Court had earlier granted bail to Zubair in the case registered by the Uttar Pradesh Police, but he could not be released from jail as he remained in custody in the case registered by the Delhi Police. Six cases have been registered against him in UP. Yesterday, Zubair filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking its cancellation. It is suggested that Zubair will remain in jail as these cases are pending.
